Our statement of belief can be found in what is probably the earliest known and simplest of Christian creeds; "Jesus is Lord" was the statement uttered by the first Christians. Why did they say it?

After all, the man they had followed for three years had been crucified before their own eyes, in front of countless visitors to the city of Jerusalem, at the very height of the main Jewish festival of Passover, which commemorated the rescue of the Israelite people from Egypt, by God. Surely this man, Jesus of Nazareth, could not have been who he claimed to be. If he had been then surely he would not have died at all, let alone a shameful criminal death, and certainly not at a time of national remembrance!!

The early Jewish Christians began to declare Jesus of Nazareth as Lord only a few days after his death. This is because they met him again, raised from the dead. It was the realisation of the resurrection of Jesus that convinced them that he was indeed God himself, able to conquer sin and death, and so they gave their lives to him entirely. In the Bible, (Acts 2:42), we find that they devoted themselves to learning, prayer, fellowship with each other, worship in order to draw closer to this wonderful God who had died, willingly, on the cross for them and who was now leading them in their everyday lives.

All this, (and more) happened 2000 years ago, and yet we still believe it is true today. We base our belief on the truth of the Bible, on the handed down experience of the Church, on our own experience of Jesus, and on the ongoing relationship we have with him today and in the future.

In St. Andrew's we can truly declare that "Jesus Christ is Lord" of our lives and we do our best to live that out within Langley Mill, Aldercar and the surrounding areas.
